Be part of something bigger

The Queensland Ranger Association connects people working in protected area management and wildlife conservation across Queensland. Work together. Build your skills. Share your passion.

The challenges of conservation work can be complex and varied. Across our vast state, the QRA supports its members to develop the connections, skills and resilience needed to thrive in their chosen careers.

From the rangers on the frontline to the specialists who support them, we all share a commitment to protecting Queensland’s natural areas and wildlife.

A community of conservation experts

QRA’s diverse membership is available to anyone employed in conservation work, regardless of their role and title. The word 'Ranger' links us together with a worldwide network of professional people working in similar roles to us.

QRA membership is open to present and past employees of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and Partnerships (QPWS&P) and employees of First Nations land management organisations.

We welcome all staff who work to protect Queensland’s wildlife and natural areas, including rangers, land and sea rangers, wildlife officers and the conservation specialists who support them. While our motto is ‘Rangers Helping Rangers’, you don’t need to have the word ‘ranger’ in your job title to become a member.

Why become a QRA member?

Access professional development opportunities. The QRA supports career development through ranger exchanges, conferences, mentoring and mutual aid projects in developing nations.

Build strong working relationships. Our organisation connects you with a valuable network of professionals, working in different places and roles.

Share your expertise and experiences. We provide a state-wide forum for our members to share knowledge and learn from one another.

Provide ideas and feedback. The QRA values the perspectives of every member. We share practical, solutions-focused feedback from our members with the QPWS&P executive team, helping ideas gain support and momentum.

Extend and receive support. The QRA offers members multiple avenues to gain support and increase your resilience when challenges arise.

Reaffirm your passion for conservation. Our organisation acts as an extended family of people working in conservation, where you can celebrate wins and collaborate with others across the state and further abroad.

Through the QRA I am able to keep my networks alive, within the state and also in the Solomon Islands: two ranger worlds that could not be more different. As Rangers, we are all on the same journey
— Roger James, QRA member

Make valuable connections at our annual muster

Every year, the QRA hosts a muster. This in-person event is an opportunity for members to come together, learn from subject experts and celebrate the experiences and achievements of members.

It also allows members to gather informally, fostering connections that can lead to ongoing working relationships or new professional opportunities.

The muster is held in different locations throughout the state. QPWS&P executives attend each year, giving members a chance to speak with them directly.

Visit the trade show and discover the latest developments and technologies supporting our work in wildlife and protected area management.

2023 QRA Muster was held at Tuchekoi, Sunshine Coast, Kabi Kabi Country on the 25-27th July. Rangers delved into “Working on the Edge” topics exploring the challenges and barriers facing rangers, conservation officers and land managers in the South East corner of QLD, at the interface edge between the urban and natural environment.

2022 QRA Muster was held at Broadwater Camp ground, Warrgamay Country, 50km from Ingham through the scenic Herbert River valley. Attended by 75+ members and 11 sponsors, we focused on connection to country, partnerships, values and nature. We also unveiled “25 years of QRA” commemorative plaque at this location.

Check out our achievements

The QRA drives important initiatives within Queensland and across the globe. Here are just a few of our achievements.

Supporting rangers in Solomon Islands and PNG with repurposed uniforms, training and skills development, and financial assistance to attend conferences.

Participating in ranger exchanges between Queensland and New Zealand, and attending national and international conferences.

Developing the first ranger welfare fund to support rangers in need, and a development scheme to support QRA members with personal and professional development.

Facilitating conversations between Queensland rangers and QPWS&P executives about current work issues, ideas and opportunities.

“I am a Wildlife Officer with the Wildlife Management Operations unit in North Queensland. I have held a membership in QRA for a few years but 2021 was the first year I got to attend a Muster and discover the benefits of being an active member of the family. Prior to this I had not really thought too much about the Association and just knew they were supposed to be there if I ever needed them. Needed them for what I was unsure.

Then I went to the Muster at Seaforth in 2021 and met a diverse bunch of people who are passionate about helping each other and showcasing the splendid work everyone does on their land for the conservation of the beautiful habitat they work, play and live in. I met people who do amazing work coming up with innovative ideas around feral animal control, fire management, weed control and people/animal management. People who span a varied group of Wildlife officers, Rangers, Indigenous Land and Sea Rangers from interstate and overseas, along with group leaders, all willing to share experiences, knowledge and friendship. I now understand the help and support we offer to each other in all aspects of being employed as a Wildlife Officer/Ranger including the hardships and the work/life restraints the job can place on everyone.

From fund raising for a boat for the Solomon Islands Rangers, standing with the Thin Green Line Organisation looking out for Rangers worldwide to sharing knowledge and information, products and services that have been sourced, tried and tested, the Queensland Rangers Association is an inclusive group of likeminded people willing to stand with you and by you in all weather.

I have come away from the Muster now feeling valued and welcomed into the Queensland Rangers Association and its extended family of interstate and international rangers. The comradery offers me extra confidence and knowledge that we are all in this together and I can turn to any one of them in celebration or for support. As it turns out, I am now a QRA Representative myself and hope to spread the good works and family orientation of QRA to all.”
